That Most Dismal of Sciences

Purely economic logic is seemingly doing little to roll back the gathering tides of stormy global recession. Whilst bail-outs and propping up operations may be vital in the short term, far too little attention is being paid to the longer term imperatives for reworked organisational cultures.

Make no mistake, the ramifications of deepening Western economic woes are culturally deeply significant.

It’s often hard to see and appreciate the big stuff that goes on around us when we are mired in the daily challenges of our life. It can be even harder to accept that our situation is not unique within history and the grand, ongoing scheme of things – we just happen to be the generation that is living right now.

As philosopher George Santayana famously said, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
 
And what the broadening Recession is doing is opening wounds that have always festered and never been properly closed.  The prevalent Social Contract is under sudden and massive strain.
